Among the features of the app is an improved visual layout that takes advantage of the high-resolution retina display available on the latest version of the iPad.

This means that users can look at high-quality images of items that are up for sale on eBay.

People buying and selling things on the site will notice some changes to the application's home screen, which automatically provides details on purchases, sales and watching activity.

The screen can be customised so individuals see content that is most relevant to them, such as saved searches for shoppers who have recently placed an order.

Features that might come in useful for sellers and regular users of eBay delivery services include a tool to change listings.

This means that someone using the iPad app to review the items they have on sale can quickly make on-the-go changes if they spot a mistake and do not have to use a Mac, PC or laptop.

The new version of the eBay app also provides a choice of three different views for looking at search results and allows users to share recommendations or information about products with friends and family via Twitter, Facebook, email and SMS messaging.

According to its creators, the tool is a "must-have for savvy eBay users".

Also available to people interested in buying and selling things online is an Amazon application compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, which lets customers search for millions of products from the online retailer and its marketplace sellers.

Features include one-click ordering, a prime member support service, wish lists, order tracking and a tool to scan barcodes in order to instantly compare prices and check availability.
